Tmoney vs Climate Card: prices, airport limits and when a pass pays off

Compare current short-term pass prices, the KRW 3,000 card cost and realistic break-even examples. Check airport direction and route coverage before buying.

Quick answer

List your actual journeys before choosing a Seoul transit pass. Compare covered rides, validity and total cost, then add airport travel and excluded trips separately. If the itinerary is uncertain or crosses different service areas, compare stored-value payment and individual tickets as well.

Choose Tmoney for flexible pay-as-you-go travel; compare a short-term Climate Card when you expect several eligible Seoul journeys each day. The important number is the total cost of your actual trips, including buying a card. A pass can save money, but a mostly walkable itinerary may not use it enough.

Tmoney and Climate Card do different jobs

A regular Tmoney balance pays fares as you travel. Tmoney also sells a specifically named TMONEY TRAVEL CARD for KRW 4,000, available at convenience stores and Incheon Airport bus ticket offices. Its official page lists transport and participating shops as uses. Do not confuse this product with the KRW 6,000 Travel Card+ or assume the card purchase includes a transport balance. For a first visit, start by writing four lines: airport arrival, ordinary Seoul days, out-of-Seoul trips, and airport departure. Price each line separately. If you already own a working Tmoney card, its purchase cost is already paid; that changes the comparison with buying another card.

These are standard fares. Charging starts the period that day; advance charging is unavailable. A one-day pass lasts through that service day, not 24 hours after your first tap. Seoul’s current pass guide.

An example you can calculate

Seoul’s published adult subway card base fare is KRW 1,550; distance and certain services can add charges. Transfers may form one fare journey, so count journeys rather than every vehicle you board. Official subway fares and transfer rules.

The following is our arithmetic, not a promised saving. Assume you already own Tmoney, every trip costs exactly KRW 1,550, and all trips qualify for Climate Card. Divide the pass cost by 1,550, then round up. A new Climate Card adds KRW 3,000 to that calculation.

1 day46
2 days68
3 days79

For example, eight separate base-fare journeys over three days cost KRW 12,400 on your existing Tmoney. A new physical Climate Card plus a three-day pass costs KRW 13,000, so it would cost KRW 600 more. At nine journeys, Tmoney totals KRW 13,950 and that same pass becomes KRW 950 cheaper. If you must buy Tmoney too, add its actual card price to its side of the calculation.

Check the airport and every day trip

Climate Card covers Seoul subway stations and Seoul-licensed city/town buses. It excludes Sinbundang, GTX, express/airport buses and other regions’ buses. The airport-rail exception permits alighting at Incheon T1/T2 from covered stations, but not boarding there. This does not make the reserved-seat AREX Express included. Check the service boundary.

Keep the airport-to-hotel trip on its own budget line; our airport transport comparison helps you choose that journey. For a Suwon, Gapyeong or other day trip, check each service directly rather than assuming a Seoul pass applies. A working payment card and an unlimited pass are different things: acceptance does not make the journey free.

Buy, load and tap without guesswork

Physical Climate Cards are sold through new vending machines on Seoul Metro Lines 1–8 and participating stores near Line 9, Ui-Sinseol and Sillim stations. Load at a station kiosk. The English instructions list cash/domestic cards; bring KRW cash. Purchase and charging instructions.

For Tmoney, Visit Seoul lists convenience stores and subway stations among recharge locations. Keep a modest balance and check it before a long journey. Transit card use and recharge locations.

Tap the same transit card when boarding and leaving. Seoul lists a transfer window of 30 minutes, extended to 60 minutes from 21:00 to 07:00; distance-based extra fares can still apply. Integrated fare conditions.

Which would we shortlist?

  • Two rides a day and long neighborhood walks: start with Tmoney and calculate before adding a pass.
  • Several separate trips daily within the covered network: compare the pass for those dates, including the card fee.
  • Late arrival followed by a busy next day: compare paying that evening separately with starting a pass the following day.
  • Mixed-city travel: plan Seoul and the other cities separately; one purchase need not solve the whole trip.
