Choose by the task you need to complete. Maps, web browsing and internet messaging need data. Calling a restaurant or receiving an ordinary text needs the appropriate voice or SMS feature. An app asking you to prove your identity is a third question: buying a tourist line with a Korean number does not automatically solve it.
For a first trip, write down the one thing that would fail without a Korean number. If you cannot name one, compare data plans first. If you need a host to call you or a restaurant to text you, compare that exact function before comparing the price.
Four options to shortlist
| Option | What the operator says | Who should investigate it |
|---|---|---|
| KT Data eSIM | Sold online or at an airport center. Incoming calls/SMS require the airport entry check; outgoing calls/SMS are unavailable. | Travelers mainly using data who can complete the check if they need incoming contact. |
| KT eSIM with calls/SMS | Sold at an airport roaming center; voice/SMS requires identity verification. Outgoing service costs extra. | Travelers who need ordinary phone calls and can stop at the airport counter. |
| LG U+ Data Only eSIM | QR details arrive after purchase; no airport visit is needed for collection. The product page excludes outgoing calls/texts; confirm any incoming-call or SMS requirement for your exact package. | Travelers mainly using maps, web browsing and internet messaging. |
| LG U+ Data+Voice eSIM | Collect the QR information at the airport after a passport check. The guide specifies a Korean 010 number. | Travelers who need voice/SMS and are prepared to visit the counter. |

A phone number is not the same as Korean identity authentication
KT expressly excludes personal authentication from its tourist eSIM. LG U+ distinguishes SMS codes from identity-verification services such as banking or government apps, which its travel plans do not support. Sources: KT service cautions and LG U+ voice/SMS explanation.
Treat an SMS code sent to a number and a Korean identity check as different requirements. If a particular reservation app is essential, ask whether it accepts your tourist plan and overseas customer details. Do not buy a plan solely because a number begins with 010. A hotel arranging the booking, an international booking page, or contacting the business directly may be a more practical fallback.
Check the phone before paying
LG U+ currently excludes Google Pixel, Motorola and OPPO devices from its eSIM support, even though some of those phones support eSIM generally. Its page also requires activation within 60 days of purchase and says a data eSIM cannot be refunded after payment. These are LG U+ product conditions, not universal eSIM rules. - Confirm the exact model, region of purchase and carrier-unlock status with the selected provider.
- Choose the device you will keep for the trip before installing the QR code.
- Compare the same number of days, data-speed conditions, hotspot allowance and any voice credit. A low starting price is not the total for your itinerary.
- Save your order reference, setup instructions and support contact where you can reach them without mobile data.
Plan the airport step before you fly
KT states that its voice/SMS entry check is completed at an airport roaming center. If you choose a product with that requirement, build the counter visit into your arrival plan. KT entry-check conditions.
Installation, starting the paid usage period and enabling voice service can be separate steps. Follow the instructions for your purchased package rather than a generic social-media video. Before leaving the counter, check that the specific function you bought works: a web page for data, and a call or message if included. Keep any unused home-line roaming features off unless you have checked their costs with your home carrier.
For a late flight, settle the collection and support arrangements before buying; use our late-arrival checklist alongside your airport transport plan. A plan that needs an airport step belongs in your arrival schedule, not just your phone settings.
Our practical choice rule
Shortlist data when your essential communication is already covered by internet apps. Shortlist voice/SMS when you have a specific contact or booking that needs it. If the main goal is identity authentication, resolve that requirement with the app and provider before spending money. We have not measured these networks or tested the bookings ourselves.
